Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose YOU to be my family photographer?

This is absolutely one of the most important questions to ask any photographer! First and foremost, I have a unique style and I love to work with beautiful light and fun, loving families. You are my artwork, and you are my inspiration. I absolutely LOVE what I do and I have very high expectations of quality, customer service, and am known to be a bit of a perfectionist about my work.  I want you to love and cherish your photographs forever!  They should last a lifetime, and you should expect the highest level of attention to detail and quality.  It is my job to tell your story, and my art is inspired by you.  I want nothing more than for your images to authentically and naturally capture your spirit and love for one another.  Every session is unique and different, as is every family that I photograph and it is my job to tell your story in a creative and beautiful way.

What is your training/background?

I have been pursuing my love of photography for over 20 years through both film and digital mediums, and professionally shooting for over 7 years.  I learned darkroom development at an early age and love what this knowledge and experience bring to my work.  I have a degree from Colorado State University in Human Development and Family Studies and furthered my studies at Auburn University Montgomery for Professional Photography.  I have also learned the good old fashioned way and simply taught myself. I love to read photography books, and crave learning and inspiration. I attend many seminars, conferences, and enjoy submitting my work for international print competition to better my skills and further my education.  I am also an active and proud member of two professional organizations, Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI).

How soon should I schedule my session?

I often book sessions 3-4 months in advance.  During the fall and spring, my calendar fills up very quickly, so please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Where will my session be held?

We will work together to determine the best possible location for your family. We will discuss your thoughts and ideas, what speaks to you, your style, and what feel you want for your final images. We will discuss a variety of settings including inside, outside, on-location, and in home options and determine what best fits your family and what we want to achieve for your final gallery.

What should I wear?

This is such an important question!  Neutrals are my absolute favorite and go to for a timeless yet modern look.  Grays, creams, black, white, browns, blues, and navy are all considered neutrals.  Pair two neutrals with a small pop of color and weave that color scheme throughout your group.  Often it is best to start with the smallest person in your group and work from there.  Prints are beautiful, but should be kept to a minimum and on the smallest person in the group.  Layers are particularly important as it gives added interest and provides for more hints of color, detail, and it’s a great way to use a print without it becoming overhwelming.  Texture and contrast are equally important especially for black and white photography.  Leather, suede, denim, fur, or woven sweaters all add interest and texture without overwhelming the eye.  I always encourage my clients to stay away from very vibrant colors, bold patterns, and being too matchy.  We want your photographs to be engaging and interesting with a timeless, classic yet modern feel.

Will you help me with my wardrobe choices?

Yes!  I love to work with my clients individually with their many wardrobe and color options.  Planning and customizing your session are such an important piece to beautiful portrait photography, and wardrobe is a very important element to the overall look and feel of the final images.  I will work with you from the moment we book your session to make our time together truly custom, unique, and all about you!  I have lots of creative ideas and can’t wait to work with you!

Are digital files or prints included in the creative fee?

Prints, products, and digital files are not included in the session fee.  The session fee includes the time and talent of the photographer, a pre-session consultation and wardrobe design assitance for your custom session, the hand editing of your gallery images, and a design and ordering session.

Do you sell digital files?

Digital files are available for purchase in collections with professional prints. If purchasing digital files, I do recommend a reputable consumer printer to help you achieve better printing for your final images.  Jane Brown & Co. Photography specializes as a full service studio and highly recommends professional printing for the archival nature, unsurpassed quality, color, and exquisite detail only achievable through the professional printing process. Professional prints are second to none, and your images should last a lifetime to be enjoyed by generations to come.  Professional photography is an art and the final rendering should be the true vision of the artist.  Printing is the final and most important step for your photographs. I look forward to helping you choose just the right canvas, album, wall gallery, or print that will stand the test of time.

What printer do you use?

I work only with professional printers that work solely with professional photographers. I love my chosen printers and expect only the highest quality finished pieces.

Do you offer design services for wall groupings and wall displays?

Yes! One of my favorite things is working with you to get your photographs printed and finished and up on your walls to enjoy! I love seeing the beautiful finished product come together and would love nothing more than to help you create a one of a kind wall grouping, gallery, or treasured family album.

Do you offer collections or only a la carte items?

I offer both a la carte items and collections. One size doesn’t always fit all, so I offer collectionss at a substantial savings and a la carte items for that perfect fit.

Do you only offer black and white, or do you also shoot in color?

I shoot everything in color first and edit in both color and black and white. I have a strong affinty for black and whites, as I think they truly capture the soul and emotion of an individual, but I absolutely adore color!

When should I book my newborn session?

I offer limited lifestyle newborn sessions, so please inquire early if you are interested in booking a newborn session. I will get you on my calendar and ask that you contact me after your baby is born and you are home from the hospital to determine the final date for your session. It is best to capture newborns within the first two weeks of life, so we will schedule your session as soon as possible after you are home.

Do you shoot weddings?

I specialize in modern family photography, but not in wedding photography.  While I adore weddings, my art is full of love for family and all of it’s intricacies, joys, and beautiful relationships.
